A variety of onion, shallots are likely of Asiatic origin and are used like common onions to flavour foods, particularly meats and sauces. The angular bulbs are less than 5 cm (2 inches) long and are mild in flavour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Habitats:<\/strong> Shallots are perennial plants but are often cultivated as annuals. The leaves are short, small, cylindrical, and hollow, and the flowers are typically lavender or red and borne in a compact umbel. The small bulbs develop in clusters on a common base, much like the garlic plant.
